5 Tips for Making Your Garage More ‘Eco-Friendly’
An eco-friendly garage upgrade not only saves money, it makes your garage a healthier and happier place to spend a few minutes of your time each day. Each of the garage upgrade tips given here are affordable and easy to implement, and pay for themselves over time. Let’s look at how to make your garage more eco-friendly.
Tip #1: Install energy efficient lighting such as LED bulbs
One thing you can do is replace the light bulbs in your garage with energy-efficient LED bulbs. LED bulbs are not cheap, but they pay off over the long term through enormous energy savings. Sure, you may argue that you hardly ever use the garage lights, but even so, it’s always better to install energy efficient lighting. After all, there’s always a chance that you’ll leave the garage lights on for the entire day by mistake. LED bulbs last for at least 15 years, so you don’t have to worry about replacing them too soon.
Tip #2: Recycle fluids
It is helpful to have containers for storing used fluids in the garage, especially if you perform a lot of your car’s maintenance in the garage itself. Brake fluid, oil, and antifreeze are toxic and should not be discarded into the drain. They should be disposed of in a safe manner, keeping the environment in mind. Only buy containers that are capable of handling such dangerous fluids safely. You can transport them later to your car service center for safe disposal.
Tip #3: Recycling everything you see in the garage
Make your garage a mini recycling center, with biodegradable trash bags for metal pieces and glass fragments. You can also add a specially designated box to hold paper and junk mail, and/or a container to hold bottles, cans, plastic, and other recyclables to be recycled later.
Tip #4: Air seal the garage and have it well insulated
Get all possible leaks in the garage sealed with caulk and foam sealant. This keeps the outside air out of the garage, which makes it energy efficient and results in major energy savings. Air sealing the garage keeps dust and dirt out and protects the vehicles within. Insulate the garage to save energy and to keep the temperature inside moderate and pleasant.
Tip #5: Replace the old garage door
The garage door takes up more space than any other door in the house. That’s why the last thing you need is a leaky or creaky garage door. Replace the old garage door with a modern, eco-friendly version, which is both weather-tight and well insulated. Upgrading to a new garage door does wonders for your energy efficiency and lowers energy bills by a considerable extent. It transforms the look of your home as well.
